What is a "HipFaerie"?Quite simply, the name is a blend of "hippie" and "Radical Faerie." The name came to me one afternoon in 1998 when I realized that I am both at heart, and wanted a way to reach others like me. When I wrote my original website material, I hadn't come up with anything more fitting, so the name stuck. What does it mean to be a hippie? I grew up after the hippies had their heyday in the late 60's and early 70's, so what I'm referring to are the "new-wave" hippie kids who identify with that era, particularly the progressive political and social values, openness, "free love," and the like. Hippie means different things to different people, so if the word resonates for you, you're in the right place! The Radical Faeries are a bit more slippery to explain. Click here for another page with links to Radical Faerie sites and explanations. The Faeries aren't an organization. They're spirits of the woods and of urban spaces, slipping into and out of the faerie realms, gathering in homes and on sanctuaries to share their life stories, hearts, love, and the possibility of being fully realized beings. Mostly queer, gay, lesbian, transgendered, gender variant, two-spirit, also heterosexual... I prefer the terms "pansexual" and "pangendered"... Radical Faeries defy definition. Again, if the name resonates for you, then you're in the right place!
Why Am I Here? You're here seemingly by random chance. Because you don't fit into the mold of conventional "gay community." You're on the margin of an already marginalized world. You don't like house music. You'd rather listen to jambands than disco divas. You don't hang out in the gym every afternoon. Your hair is spiked or long or completely shaven. You wear sarongs or hemp or crystals or... nothing at all! You might even feel like you're the only person in the world who understands you, and everyone else is too square or busy trying to be normal that they pay you no mind. And you ask, where are the other people like me, who can relate to me? You are not alone. We are scattered far and wide, and sometimes we live in the same neighborhoods without even knowing it. The Internet has given us a valuable tool to find each other. And here we are. This site is for gay, lesbian, queer, trans- or other-gendered people everywhere who defy conventional descriptions. Hippies, punks, goths, longhairs, faeries, activists, radical and progressive politics, poets, any spiritual path or none... you are welcome.
What's the purpose of your site, Shaggy?I created the site as a beacon into the world, a hopeful medium through which to extend the "astral search" down onto an earthly level using what was, at the time I created the site, a revolutionary new tool. So the site is a beacon to others like myself to come home. To come to each other. To make connections that were fractured many moons ago when the cosmic pottery was dropped. We've all been together before, and now it's time for us to come home again, to come home to our hearts, share our poetry and music, share intimate, erotic, and ecstatic experiences of body, mind, and spirit, be free with wild abandon and experience deep mutual support. And have fun! Drink from the holy grail and celebrate who we are - together.Since I created the site in 1998, I've been through a lot, learned a lot, come into a different place and comfort level with a lot of things in my life... and uncovered new challenges. I wish you similar growth journeys, and where we can share along the way, let's share. Feel free to contribute/post your own thoughts by contacting me. I can't build a community alone - your participation is vital. I have strived to create a safe community here, where anyone who wishes is welcome to express themselves, crack through the shell of the old self, and build something new and wonderful. You can click here to read the site's original front page, which describes a little more about why I created the site. Bear in mind, most of it was written in 1998, a very different time in my life!
How Can I Stay Connected Here? The best way is to join the HipFaerie E-Mail List. And feel free to contact me anytime. My e-mail address is and I look forward to the journey!
Peace and blessings to all who arrive here.
